when all else fails, come up with a theme

Smack dab in the middle of our homemade summer camp, we had a summer vacation - so I’m backlogged on posts! Here’s a shot of one of the trend collages my kids created for Fashion Week. According to them, GREEN IS IN!

It’s Fashion Week!

Today my daughter cut pictures out of magazines and spotted “trends” or recurring themes, as part of Fashion Week.

This is what’s in according to my little girl: the color green, the color blush, creature jewelry (peacocks, butterflies), pink jewels, frilly dresses, gold jewelry and the “by-the-sea” look.

These are the matching bangles my daughter and I picked up in Little India as part of Around The World Week (and India day). The small ones for kids are oh-so-cute!

Our next stop on our Around The World in 7 Days trip was India. The day started with henna designs (drawn on paper). Then we ate at an Indian restaurant and my adventurous kids tried Samosa and Tandoori Fish for the first time. Our trip to India ended with shopping in Little India - my daughter and I bought matching bangle sets.

Our next stop for Around The World in 7 Days Week was China. We celebrated Chinese New Year and made our own dragons using a cut out from a book (Children Around the World: The Ultimate Class Field Trip) along with a paper bag, dragon wrapping paper from our nearby Asian grocery store and tape. The kids had so much fun running around with their dragon puppets.

The first stop on our whirlwind Around The World in 7 Days Trip was: Brazil! To celebrate, we had a Carnaval, donned feathered masks, put on some samba music and danced the night away. For dessert, we fried up some plantains. So perfect that we already had music on our iPod that fit the theme - um, the soundtrack from “Rio.” :)

Check out these “suitcases” we made for Around The World in 7 Days Week. Materials: wooden boxes (with handles), paint, travel stickers and imagination. Bon Voyage!

For Around The World in 7 Days Week, I was so set on giving the kids passports so they could receive stamps and remember all the countries they visited. I found these miniature passports (that look like the real deal) in the scrapbooking section of my local Michael’s. SCORE!

It’s Around The World in 7 Days Week! We want to go on a whirlwind adventure so we asked the kids where in the world they’d want to go. Yes, my son actually said he wants to go to the W Hotel. I think I need to get him used to a different hotel category. :)

Moving On - Farewell, Transportation Week!

This was a busy week for us so we didn’t get to implement so many other things I had planned. Here are some extra ideas that I want to jot down for future reference:

  • Trip to Queen Mary
  • Train ride and station visit
  • Riding bikes or skates at the park or beach
  • Nautical museum
  • Any kind of boat ride
  • Create a vehicle (with legos, blocks or other building materials)
  • Scavenger hunt requiring use of different forms of transportation
  • Trip to the local fire station

All aboard! Moving on to next week’s adventure…
